Teacher Leadership

Alburnett TLC

Our Teacher Leadership program is comprised of different Teacher Leaders who coach our staff through a triad of why, what, and how. According to Elena Aguilar, Coach & Author, coaching is supporting the personalized exploration and development of "the intellect, behaviors, practices, beliefs, values, and feelings of [educators]." (Aguilar, 2013, 8)

With this in mind, our coaches help our staff understand why we work toward continuous improvement, what goals are needed to get us there, and how they will use the coaching cycle to accomplish this.

Why

A high-functioning school, such as Alburnett, joins teachers, coaches, and principals together in the work of continuous improvement. At Alburnett, we solidify this team approach through the triad process. This reflection allows for continuous improvement in our practice which will, in turn, improve the learning for every student.

Coaching allows teachers to have deeper, more frequent, and more consistent learning practices. Not only does coaching support the improvement of a teacher's learning capacity but allows them to reflect and apply this with their students and co-workers. Coaching empowers teachers by addressing their professional learning needs which then improves their instruction and the work of their coaches.

Collaborative commitments between the coach and teacher are outlined here and aid in the entire process with the end goal(s) in mind.

What

Focusing on district goals and standards along with specified individual teacher practice goals, teachers and coaches work together to advance teacher effectiveness and connection through the Teacher Inquiry Cycle via their agreed-upon coaching strategies.

Examples of different coaching strategies include observation, performance-based feedback, problem-solving, and role-play. For a complete look at the various methods, please see our Coaching Menu.

How

Our coaches and teachers work together using Action Planning Goal Worksheets to complete the Teacher Inquiry Cycle. Once a cycle is completed, the coach, teacher, and building principal have a short, non-evaluation meeting to discuss the outcome.
